International Cooperation
The international cooperation began from the route survey of Sino-Japan submarine cable in 1973. In last thirty years and more, over 1500 scientists from 30 countries of five continents visited the Institute, and more than 1000 scientists from the Institute went to 40 countries for academic exchange, cooperative research or attending international symposiums. Long-term cooperative relations have been established with more than 20 countries and regions including US, Japan, France, Germany, Netherlands, Canada, Australia, South Korea and Taiwan and Hong Kong. 50 cooperative projects have been carried out including Sino-US Joint Study on Modern Sedimentary Process of Changjiang Estuary, Sino-France Biogeochemical Study in Changjiang Estuary and its Adjacent Coastal Waters, Sino-Germany Sedimentation and Geochemical Process of South China Sea and Sino-Japan Kuroshio Study,Project of the Sea-air Interaction of the Developing Process of Cyclone Outbreak over the Yellow and East China Seas.
The Institute was the leading unit in China-US Joint Study on Modern Sedimentary Process of Changjiang Estuary participated by 18 institutions from SOA, CAS and the Ministry of Education(1979-1983) On Apr.18-23,2004,the institute undertook Sixth IOC/WESTPAC International Scientific Symposium-Challenges for Marine Science in the Western Pacific
On Oct.23-27,2002, the institute Undertook the "SPIE's Third Int'l Asia-Pacific Environmental Remote Sensing Symposium-Remote Sensing of the Atmosphere, Ocean, Environment, and Space 2002." More than 500 foreign attendee attended the meeting, including Mr.Gregory W. Withee (Deputy Administrator of NOAA) and Mr.Ghassem R.Asrar (Deputy Administrator of NASA).Academician Pan Delu, make a keynote speech on the opening ceremony and won the "science and technology achievements awards of International remote" Cooperation with Germany in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, marine remote sensing and physical oceanography has lasted for more than ten years. Scientists of the Institute got on board German R/V Sonne many times for joint investigation. In the cooperation sediment trap was used for the first time in China in 1987 and deployed and recovered successfully many times afterwards
