The 6th International Symposium on Science and Law of the Continental Shelf and International Seabed Area System was held

      On May 30-31, the 6th International Symposium on Science and Law of the Continental Shelf and International Seabed Area System, jointly supported by the State Oceanic Administration, China Ocean Mineral Resources R&D Association, Chinese Academy of Engineering and Zhejiang Province Academy of Marine Sciences, sponsored by our institute and China Institute for Marine Affairs, was held in Wuzhen Town of Zhejiang Province. Lin Shanqing, a member of the Party Group of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Eugeny Kiselev, vice minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia, and Ma Xinmin, deputy director of Department of Treaty and Law of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. More than 130 people from 30 countries and regions attended this meeting, including the chairmen and vice chairmen of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, the secretary general of the International Seabed Authority, the judge and the clerk of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the legal adviser of the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, and the heads and representatives from other important international marine affairs agencies.
      Lin Shanqing, on behalf of the Ministry of Natural Resources, warmly congratulated the successful convening of the symposium. He said that China is a developing marine power, who attaches great importance to the development of the marine cause, and proposes to speed up the construction of a marine power. China will continue to play the role of a responsible great power and actively participate in the reform and construction of the global marine governance system. We attach great importance to and strictly abide by the various legal systems established by the Convention and faithfully perform all obligations stipulated in the Convention. We have, for a long time, actively participated in and supported the relevant work of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, the International Seabed Authority and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, maintained a friendly relationship with various institutions and made due contributions in the related field. Chinese government also highly commends the achievements made by the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, the International Seabed Authority and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea and other international institutions in the above-mentioned areas. Ministry of Natural Resources of the People's Republic of China hopes to further strengthen the cooperation and exchange with all parties to jointly promote the improvement and development of the international marine system.
      At the opening ceremony, Chen Yue, the head of the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and Ma Xinmin, the deputy director of Department of Treaty and Law of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made a keynote address, respectively entitled "building a fair and rational marine order, and promoting the sustainable development of the ocean" and "China and United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea: Policy and Practice". The heads of the four major international marine affairs agencies also made a keynote speech on the related work and latest progress in their respective responsible fields. In the subsequent meeting, the participating experts and scholars will carry out extensive and in-depth exchanges and discussions by embracing the scientific and legal issues related to the theory and practice of the outer continental shelf and the "area".
      Since May 2010, International Symposium on Science and Law of Continental Shelf and International Seabed Area System has been successfully held for six sessions. It is the unique high-end academic international symposium in the world to which the heads of the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, the International Seabed Authority, the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea attended and delivered speeches. The success of the symposium has set up a high-end international platform with scientific and legal cross academic exchanges and marine affairs exchanges, in the field of the continental shelf and the international seabed area system.
