On September 17, the Fifth Plenary Session of ISO/TC8/SC13 was successfully held in Copenhagen, Denmark. More than 20 experts from China, the United States, Japan, Germany, Canada, South Korea and other countries participated in the meeting, which was chaired by Academician LI Jiabiao, Chairman of ISO/TC8/SC13.

Chairman LI Jiabiao introduced the achievements of ISO/TC8/SC13 over the past year, emphasizing that SC13 will focus on intelligent oceans, deep-sea exploration, marine environmental protection and polar sea areas in the future, and thanked all parties for their support. On behalf of the SC13 Secretariat, Fellow FENG Xuwen reported on the progress of the work of ISO/TC8/SC13 since the fourth plenary meeting held in last May, in particular on the promotion of the establishment of liaison organizations with the International Seabed Authority (ISA).
Since its establishment in 2014, ISO/TC8/SC13 has promoted six international standard proposals in an orderly manner. Among them, the submersible proposal led by China has passed the first two rounds of ISO voting. At present, it is in the stage of draft international standards (DIS), and the other five proposals are in the stage of working draft (WD). Eight other proposals are preliminarily registered. ISO/TC8/SC13 has established four working groups covering submersible, ocean observation, desalination and marine environmental impact assessment.
In the discussion of proposal progress and the future focus of work, many experts from Canada, China, Japan and Germany had heated discussion on the performance of ocean sensors, the development of ocean standards in China and how to go global, the importance of establishing ocean bottom seismograph standards and the standards for marine meteorological instruments. SC13 will further promote the cooperation between ISO and international organizations such as the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and strengthen its links with the marine technology and equipment industry in the future.
From 17 to 21 September, SC13 representatives also participated in the 37th plenary meeting of ISO/TC8 held in the same period. Chairman of ISO/TC8/SC13, academician LI Jiabiao made a report, introducing the achievements made in the field of international standards for marine technology in the past year, and putting forward the direction of future development and key tasks.
