On July 25-28,  the 1st U.S.-China Joint Scientific Experts Group(JSEG) Meeting co-organized by SIO was held in Qingdao. Academician CHEN Dake and Dr. Francisco Werner, the chief scientist of the US National Marine Fisheries Service(NMFS) and relevant leaders of the Ministry of Natural Resources attended the meeting.
During the 19th U.S.–China Joint Scientific Working Group Meeting in November 2016, the two parties decided to establish a joint expert group to promote the implementation of Framework Plan for Ocean and Fishery Science and Technology Cooperation for 2016-2020 between NOAA and the State Oceanic Administration (Hereinafter referred to as the framework plan), to provide guidance and technical support for ocean and fishery science and technology cooperation. The JSEG consists of seven experts in the ocean field from China and the United States. Our academician CHEN Dake is the chairman of the Chinese JSEG, and Dr. Francisco Werner, the chief scientist of NMFS, is the chairman of the US JSEG.
At the meeting, SUN Shengzhi, the deputy director of the Ministry of Natural Resources introduced the cooperation experience and achievements in ocean and fishery science and technology cooperation between the US and China since 1979, the US experts expressed their opinions on the preliminary research work of the conference and expressed strong interests in substantive contributions to the future cooperation with China. JSEG members discussed extensively on the three issues of exploring the impacts of climate changing on marine resources, developing ocean observation techniques for extreme climate events, and studying the biological response caused by environmental changes. Both parties gathered consensus on cooperation and put forward specific implementation recommendations for the framework plan from offshore comparative studies, polar and the low-latitude hotspot cooperation, aquatic products and fishery food safety, and global observation and forecasting system.
Ocean and Fishery Science and Technology Cooperation between the US and China is one of the key areas for bilateral cooperation in the ocean field between the two countries, and it also plays an important role in promoting multilateral cooperation. This meeting is an important manifestation of China’s participation in global marine scientific research, which promotes the cooperation entered into a new stage between China and the US in ocean science and technology.
