Recently, with the support of the China Ocean Affairs Administration, the InterRidge Working Group of Seafloor Massive Sulfides Resources along Mid-Ocean Ridges, led by TAO Chunhui, a researcher from the Key Laboratory of Submarine Science, has been officially established with the approval of InterRidge, and its official website is synchronously online (http://www.interridge.org/WG_SMS_MOR).
The InterRidge Working Group of Seafloor Massive Sulfides Resource along Mid-Ocean Ridges is a working group under the framework of InterRidge, which aims at the sulfides resource along mid-ocean ridges. It is composed of 14 well-known experts from 10 countries in the field of sulfides along mid-ocean ridges, including China, Russia, the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, India, Norway, South Korea and Portugal. It is co-chaired by researcher TAO Chunhui from SIO, Prof. Georgy Cherkashov of the Russian Institute of Marine Geology and Prof. Maurice Tivey of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. The working group will work to enhance international cooperation among global scientists in the field of sulfides along mid-ocean ridges, and jointly solve the scientific problems in the formation, mechanism and characteristics of sulfides in the mid-ocean ridges, especially in the mid-ocean ridges with slow and super-slow expansion. The establishment of the working group will help to strengthen the exchanges between Chinese scientists and foreign counterparts in the field of sulfide resources in the mid-ocean ridge, and promote our research in the contract area for the exploration of polymetallic sulfides in the seabed of the Southwest Indian Ocean and other mid-ocean ridges.
The InterRidge, co-chaired by Academician LI Jiabiao last time, is an international non-profit organization, established by several member countries in 1992. Its purpose is to coordinate various countries in the comprehensive multi-disciplinary research on the mid-ocean ridge, promote interdisciplinary exchanges, promote the research of ocean expansion centers through cooperation among various countries, and share technology and equipment, and promote the sharing of knowledge among scientists and governments in various countries. Through workshops, seminars and international conferences, InterRidge identifies the issues of greatest concern in the field of mid-ocean ridge research and formulates corresponding research plans.
