Since 1980s, under the leadership of SOA and COMRA, exploration and study on ocean mineral resources (polymetallic nodule, cobalt-rich crust, hydrothermal sulfide and gas hydrate) have been carried out using the most advanced technology in the world including multi-frequency, multi-beam (with the ability and technology of detection from shallow water to deep ocean), submarine robot, deep towed and seabed camera system and rich results were made in the study of seabed resources distribution law, minerogenetic mechanisms and dynamics and the development of corresponding high-tech detection means, which made China the 5th Pioneer Investor for the exploitation of polymetallic resources. To perform the obligation given by the International Seabed Commission, international training course was organized and NaVaBa project was raised for environmental protection in pioneer area, which was appreciated by international colleagues.
In the past twenty years, the institute was in charge to organize and carry out the exploration of deep-sea resources and environment, and it was the primary technical supporting unit of China to apply the international seabed resources and took part in the international seabed management. |
