Recently, Mr. Aldino Campos, Chair of the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS), led a delegation of CLCS members from Asia, Africa and Europe to visit our institute. The delegation held thematic forums and in-depth academic discussions on continental shelf issues with our research teams.

Prof. Fang Yinxia, the Director General of the SIO, extended a warm welcome to the UN CLCS delegation. She expressed the hope that both sides would sustain regular communication and deepen multi-dimensional cooperation in international ocean governance. Chair Aldino Campos fully recognized the fruitful achievements and outstanding contributions made by SIO in marine scientific research and global maritime exchanges. Both sides expressed the willingness to further promote exchanges and collaborative research in the fields of marine science and international ocean governance in the future.

During the visit, the delegation visited the institute’s exhibition hall and the State Key Laboratory of Submarine Geoscience and Delimitation, gaining a comprehensive insight into the institute’s development history, disciplinary layout, core research achievements, as well as the cutting-edge research platform for seabed science. Centering on technical training for continental shelf delineation, the Scientific and Technical Guidelines of the Commission, frontier geoscience issues and the institute’s international cooperation programs, the two sides conducted in-depth discussions.

During the forum, all members of the delegation spoke highly of the remarkable outcomes achieved by the 8th International Symposium on Scientific and Legal Aspects of the Regimes of the Continental Shelf and the Area. They fully acknowledged the strengths of the State Key Laboratory of Submarine Geoscience and Delimitation in supporting China’s national continental shelf delineation work, spearheading cutting-edge advances in seabed science, and disseminating standardized delineation technical systems. The delegation expressed readiness to forge close cooperation and share resources with the laboratory, leverage international exchange and cooperation platforms, and jointly advance the professionalization and internationalization of seabed scientific research and ocean governance.
