Do you know how to rescue stranded whales? Have you ever seen a flying fish? Have you ever heard of fire under the thick ice of the Arctic? With the approaching of the 14th World Ocean Day and the 15th National Ocean Propaganda Day, on the evening of June 7, SIO opened a “Wonderful Night of the Ocean” for the audience of the whole network with a “Cloud Science Popularization”, to convey the concept of “protecting marine ecosystem and ensuring harmony between man and nature”.
At 19:00 on the evening of June 7, “Cloud Science Popularization” was launched in “Why Do We Explore the Ocean?” of Children and Academician version, and the researchers of SIO carefully prepared sumptuous science feast for cloud audience. In the live broadcast room, Senior Engineer Zhai Hongchang shared his experience of rescuing stranded sperm whales with “Sperm Whales-The Giant in the Ocean”; Post-Doctor Ji Fei introduced the todarodes pacificus, the leading night snack “hot squid” with the title of “Flying Traveler- Todarodes Pacificus”; Focusing on the theme of ocean observation, Researcher Ding Weiwei shared the wonderful moments of participating in China’s 12th Arctic scientific expedition with “A Song of Ice and Fire-Exploring the Bottom of the Arctic Ocean”; Engineer Li Zhaoqin introduced the working principle of Argo, a powerful instrument for ocean observation, and the progress of China’s participation in the global Argo program with “Argo-The Detective Guard of the Ocean”; Finally, Associate Researcher Liu Ting made a popular science report entitled “ENSO - The Driving Force Behind Abnormal Weather and Climate” on weather and climate concerned by people, and analyzed the principle and influence of El Nino and La Nina. Reports from the five scientists were informative and easy to understand, and the audience in the live broadcast room said that they had learned a lot.
During the live broadcast, Jiang Yue, a postgraduate of SIO, got a face-to-face chance with Chen Dake, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, to talk about how to protect the marine ecosystem and promote the harmony between man and nature. In the live broadcast, the satellite ground station of SIO in Hangzhou and the science and technology support base of SIO in Sanmen, Taizhou were also connected, popularizing scientific knowledge in ocean observation, marine biology and other fields.
During the live broadcast that last an hour and a half, a total of 1.3 million viewers swarmed into Xuexi.cn, China Blue TV, iNature Omnimedia and other new media platforms to watch, listen to reports, do experiments, answer questions, and visit online, joining this marine science feast. As the national marine science education base, SIO organizes various activities to popularize marine knowledge and the idea of ocean conservation at the World Ocean Day on June 8 every year. More extensive viewers are involved this year with the help of cloud live broadcast, cloud interaction and cloud science popularization. “Cloud Science Popularization” shows the charm of marine science, and plants the “seeds of the ocean” in children’s hearts.
