Researcher Tang Yong was elected as the Vice Chairman of the new UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf

On July 5, at the 58th session of the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, Researcher Tang Yong, Director of the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf Research Center of the SIO, was elected as the Vice Chairman of the new UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. This is the first time since the establishment of the Commission 26 years ago that a Chinese member has entered the decision-making level of the presidium on behalf of Asian-Pacific nations.

The Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf consists of 21 experts in geology, geophysics or hydrography selected by states parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, who deliberate and make recommendations on the proposals for the delineation of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles submitted based on science by coastal states. The limits of the continental shelf delineated by the coastal state on the basis of these recommendations are definitive and binding. According to the seat distribution in the Commission, 6 members are from the Group of African States, 5 members are from the Group of Asian-Pacific States, 3 members are from the Group of Eastern European States, 3 members are from the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States, 3 members are from the Group of Western European and Other States, and the presidium members come from the Group of Western European, Asian-Pacific, African and Latin American States.

Researcher Tang Yong has long been engaged in the research on continental margin dynamics and continental shelf delimitation. He is a leading scientific and technological innovation talent of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Zhejiang Province, and the chief scientist of the International Cooperation on the Continental Shelf between China and Africa. He was elected as a member of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in January 2019 and was successfully re-elected as the first member of the Group of Asian-Pacific States in June 2022.
