On January 9, Hu Ji, Zhang Wei and Yang Zhedong from the Key Laboratory of Marine Ecosystem Dynamics of the Second Institute of Oceanography (SIO) set off to Antarctica to participate in China’s 40th Antarctic scientific expedition.

China’s 40th Antarctic scientific expedition will include the construction of new scientific research stations, international cooperation and investigations into the impact and feedback of climate change on the Antarctic ecosystem. Researchers from the SIO will mainly rely on the “Xuelong” and “Xuelong 2” ships to conduct comprehensive investigations on the biological ecology, water environment and sedimentary environment in the waters near the Prydz Bay and Cosmonauts Sea in East Antarctica, and the Amundsen Sea in West Antarctica, respectively, and deeply study the role of Antarctica in global climate change. Previously, Hao Qiang and Zhu Changfeng from the Key Laboratory of Marine Ecosystem Dynamics set off for the Amundsen Sea scientific expedition in Antarctica in December last year.

China’s 40th Antarctic scientific expedition team departed in November 2023. It is the first voyage supported by three ships in the history of Antarctic scientific exploration in China. The expedition team plans to complete all the expedition tasks and return to Shanghai in April 2024.
