On November 30, the 9th Plenary Session of the International Organization for Standardization Marine Technology Subcommittee (ISO/TC8/SC13, hereinafter referred to as SC13) was held. More than 30 experts from countries like China, Denmark, Germany, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Panama, the United States, as well as international organizations such as the International Meteorological Organization (WMO) attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Academician Li Jiabiao, Chairman of the Subcommittee.

At the meeting, Researcher Feng Xuwen, on behalf of the Secretariat of SC13, reported the progress of the international standards of technical guidelines for active source detection of submarine seismographs and other standards developed and published under the leading of the SIO in 2022, introduced the frontier hot spots in the field of marine technology in the future, and promoted the establishment of Blue Carbon Working Group and Seabed Detection Working Group. At the discussion stage of the meeting, the convener of the working group on underwater vehicle, marine hydrometeorological observation, seawater desalination and marine environmental impact assessment primarily reported on the planning for standard setting in the future. In the discussion link of the new proposal, Academician Chen Dake of the SIO, Professor Ken Krauss from the United States Geological Survey and Researcher Lei Yanli from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences introduced the smart ocean, coastal blue carbon and marine carbon negative emissions, which will also be the key work of SC13 in the next few years.

Chairman Li Jiabiao affirmed that SC13 has effectively promoted the publication of international standards and innovatively expanded the standard research field of ISO since its establishment eight years ago. SC13, founded in 2014, is committed to providing international standards for the observation, development and environmental protection of oceans and related sea areas. It has officially published 11 ISO international standards, and possesses 5 standards under research, of which 11 are led by China. SC13 has gradually grown into a key subcommittee of ISO in the field of marine technology.
