On the occasion of the National Science Popularization Day, the SIO, Hangzhou Gongshu District Association for Science and Technology and Zhejiang Provincial Association of High-level Youth Talents jointly hosted the “Science Popularization Helps Double Reduction and Lights up the Science Dream” -Activities for Science Popularization by Scientists on Campus. Scientists from the SIO entered Hangzhou Qizheng Middle School, Wenlan Experimental School and Jinghang Kindergarten to enlighten children about the ocean and climate, marine animals and ecological protection.

In Wenlan Experimental School, Associate Researcher Ying Jun gave a science popularization lecture titled “Will the Next Summer Be Hotter?” to the students in Grade 3 of primary school. The researcher explained several factors affecting the climate change in China against the high temperature weather in Hangzhou this summer, introduced the subtropical high pressure, atmospheric circulation and other scientific terms, explained the difference between weather and climate, helped pupils set up low-carbon and environmental protection life concept, and let the children do the “environmental protection superman at home”. In the class, the students actively interacted and put forward various low-carbon and environmental protection measures such as driving fewer fuel cars and sorting garbage, striving to be the guardian of protecting the environment and slowing down global warming.

In Qizheng Middle School, Researcher Ding Weiwei shared with all the students of Grade 1 and Grade 2 the precious experience of the scientific expedition to the Arctic, told the vivid story of the marine geological expedition carried out by Chinese scientists in the Arctic, showed the beautiful scenery of the Arctic on the route, and introduced the XUE LONG 2 polar expedition vessel, a great treasure carrying scientists for polar scientific investigation. The young reporters of Qizheng Middle School raised many questions about the volcanic eruption beneath the Arctic Ocean and deep-sea organisms. Ding Weiwei answered them one by one, and encouraged the children to bravely explore the road of life with his own experience.

In Jinghang Kindergarten, Dr. Zhang Haifeng explained various kinds of small knowledge about sea turtles for children, shared the stories of The tough way to survive for sea turtles and "Turtle Rescue at Sea" with videos, and conveyed the idea of protecting the marine environment and caring for marine life to children with his vivid story of rescuing the large sea turtle trapped by fishing nets during the scientific voyage. More than 100 children who participated in the science popularization class listened with great interest. Seeing that the little turtle was in danger, they stood up and cheered for the little turtle. At the same time, Jinghang Kindergarten shared the science popularization class to four campuses of the Kindergarten through live video, and 900 children watched the story of the little turtle online synchronously. In addition to the science popularization explanation, Zhang Haifeng also answered “why is the ice house not so cold?”, “what is the submarine black chimney?” and other wonderful ideas, so as to enhance children’s knowledge of the ocean.
