On April 19, a stranded sperm whale in the waters of Banbian Mountain, Shipu Town, Xiangshan County drew the attention of thousands of people, and SIO immediately organized related personnel to rush to Xiangshan for rescue.

A professional team composed of Zhai Hongchang, Wang Xiaogu and Zeng Dingyong from the Key Laboratory of Marine Ecosystem Dynamics, MNR and the State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics arrived at Xiangshan and went to the scene for observation. The team judged that this was a male adult sperm whale with a body length of more than 19 meters, and it was in good health because of being rescued in time after stranding. The professional team immediately went to the headquarters to assist in making the rescue plan.

After more than 20 hours’ fighting, the stranded sperm whale was towed to the Nanjiushan sea area farther offshore at 5:00 on the 20th. The team members carefully untied the rope to release the sperm whale. The sperm whale stretched its muscles and bones and swam slowly to open waters with the company of team members. 20 minutes later, the increasingly energetic sperm whale dived and disappeared, and the rescue work achieved a temporary victory.
