On October 27, the Online Annual Conference of North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) was opened, with three awards awarded-Wooster AWARD, Zhu-Peterson AWARD (Zhu-Peterson Young Scientist Award), La Perouse Program-POMA AWARD. Dr. Wang Pengbin, associate researcher of the Key Laboratory of Marine Ecosystem Dynamics of the Ministry of Natural Resources, stood out from many young scientists from North Pacific countries and won the first Zhu-Petersen Young Scientist Award, and was highly rated by the former Secretary-General Alexander Bychkov and the current Chairman of the Science Bureau Vera L. Trainer.
The Zhu-Peterson Young Scientist Award is a new award approved by the PICES Management Council in 2019. The award is to commemorate Professor Zhu Mingyuan and Dr. Bill Peterson, who strongly encouraged young scientists to devote themselves to the North Pacific Marine Science Organization. The Zhu-Peterson Young Scientist Award is awarded to outstanding young personnel who conduct innovative research in the scientific frontiers of the North Pacific Ocean Region, as appropriate, one person a year.
At the forum, Dr. Wang Pengbin gave a conference report "The contributions of Early Career Ocean Professionals to PICES within the context of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030)". Dr. Wang Pengbin is currently the Co-Chairman of PICES-HAB Committee, member of the HAB Project Steering Committee of IOC-WESTPAC and member of Scientific Steering Committee of East Asian HAB, with main research fields in microalgae biology and harmful algal bloom ecology. He is the editor of Ocean Science Journal (SCI), and the reviewer in many professional fields such as Marine and Freshwater Research, European Journal of Phycology and Journal of Oceanography.
