      On May 26-29, the International Symposium on the Environmental Management Plan for the Cobalt-rich Crust Area in the Northwest Pacific, sponsored by International Seabed Authority and China Ocean Mineral Resources R&D Association, organized by our institute and National Deep Sea Center, was held in Qingdao. More than 100 representatives and experts from the United Nations, the International Seabed Authority, China, the United States, Russia, Australia, Japan, Brazil, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Korea and Fiji attended the symposium. Lin Shanqing, a member of the Party Group of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Michael Lodge, secretary-general of the International Seabed Authority, delivered the welcome speech respectively on behalf of Ministry of Natural Resources and the International Seabed Authority, and Liu Feng, secretary-general of China Ocean Mineral Resources R&D Association, presided over the opening ceremony.
      With the theme of "science and system, cooperation and sharing", a discussion was carried out on this symposium embracing three topics, including the legal framework, cobalt-rich crust habitat, regional environmental management plans’ suggestions and prospects, and the forms involved the invited lecture of the symposium, the special report, World Café Rule method, and so on. Researcher Wang Chunsheng and Xu Xuewei from our institute delivered the report, respectively entitled "the structure, distribution and influence factors of the giant animal community in the Northwest Pacific seamount" and the "proposal for the environmental management plan for the cobalt-rich crust area in the Northwest Pacific triangle area".
      On the symposium, an overview was given to the national, regional and international policies and laws related to the marine environment, the environmental baseline data of the Northwest Pacific seamount were shared, a preliminary consensus was reached on the future work of the regional environmental management plan, and an international cooperation plan was recommended to be initiated as soon as possible under the coordination of the International Seabed Authority. The convening of the symposium has carried out the important achievements of the principle of "joint discussion, co-construction and sharing" and is the concrete embodiment of implementing the concept of "global governance" in China.
