On November 24, the winter survey voyage of the special scientific investigation mission organized by SIO, the Indian Ocean Joint Advanced Marine and Ecological Studies (referred to as the JAMES research plan), set sail from Zhoushan. The JAMES voyage aims to study the changes in the marine ecological environment of the Indian Ocean and its response to monsoon, climate and human activities, especially the formation mechanism of hypoxia in the subsurface waters of the Bay of Bengal and its impact on the surrounding marine ecosystems. The Institute will work together with the countries along the Maritime Silk Road, like Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Bangladesh, to implement the “One Belt and One Road” vision and the construction of the marine community of shared future.
A lot of international cooperation has been carried out in this mission. SIO exchanged visits with researchers from Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bangladesh and other countries for 7 times, and held a 5-day seminar in Hangzhou before the voyage, with a total of 17 scholars from these countries participating. The voyage will be subject to specific international cooperation investigation according to the approval situation of the cooperative countries. There will be 3 legs of voyage in the international waters with a cumulative period of more than 3 months.
This is a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional collaborative voyage. It was mainly undertaken by the State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics of our institute and the Key Laboratory of Marine Ecosystem and Biogeochemistry, and jointly participated by the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center, the National Ocean Technology Center, the Beihai Ocean Engineering Survey and Research Institute, the Beihai Ocean Technology Support Center, Shenyang Institute of Automation Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tianjin Deepfar Ocean Technology Co., Ltd., etc., with the main investigation task carried out by XIANGYANGHONG 06.
