Recently, the “2019 Asia-Pacific Regional Marine Microplastics Monitoring and Management International Symposium” jointly organized by SIO and Zhejiang University was held in Xiamen. More than 50 people, including experts, scholars, government department representatives from eight APEC economies, and overseas students winning the Chinese government’s ocean scholarship, participated in the symposium to discuss monitoring and management countermeasures of marine microplastics.
The conference is divided into four parts: research methods, distribution status, management countermeasures, and proposal discussions on marine microplastics. The participating experts and scholars made presentations on the topics of “sharing the best practices, information, knowledge and technology of microplastics monitoring in APEC”, “strengthening the building of management capabilities for marine and coastal zones based on ecosystems”, “protection and sustainable utilization of marine resources”, etc.
Participants expressed the hope of strengthening the links among research institutions through international cooperation platforms such as APEC, in order to work together to solve the resource and environmental issues of the ocean. Representatives of the economies on both sides of the Pacific wished to unify monitoring methods and share model research methods as soon as possible, and expressed their hope to learn from China’s experience in the use, control and scientific research of plastics.
In the face of the increasingly serious marine microplastics and other new environmental problems, the Institute has taken the lead in establishing the marine microplastics analysis laboratory in domestic research institutions. Through the recent three years of exploration and research in such fields as marine microplastics detection methods and ecological effects, the research level of my Institute in this field has been widely recognized by experts and peers participating in the conference.
