The coastal wetland blue carbon ecosystem can capture and store a lot of carbon, and has high carbon sequestration efficiency and long-term sustainable carbon sequestration capacity. There is a vast area of muddy beach uncovered by vegetation in China’s coastal wetlands, which has high sediment burial rate, and strong carbon sequestration potential. It is a nature-based carbon sink solution, and should also be included in the coastal wetland blue carbon sink measurement system.

In 2022, the Key Laboratory of Marine Ecosystem Dynamics of the SIO, using remote sensing and unmanned aerial vehicle technology, carried out field investigations on the south shore of Hangzhou Bay, Aiwan Bay, Yueqing Bay, Yanpu Bay and other muddy beaches, collected samples of undisturbed core sediments, benthic organisms and microalgae, and measured field productivity cultivation and soil respiration rate. Scientific researchers have found that the muddy beach ecosystem in Zhejiang Province has huge carbon reserves and considerable carbon sink potential, initially established the investigation and evaluation method of the carbon reserve in the muddy beach ecosystem, studied and prepared the technical specifications for the investigation and evaluation of the carbon pool in the muddy beach ecosystem.
