On September 25-26, the International Ocean Discovery Program IODP-400 Voyage “Ship-Shore Connection” science popularization live broadcast was held in Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province. Associate Researchers Ren Jian and Wang Rong of the SIO gave a vivid marine science lesson to primary and secondary school students through ship-shore cooperation. This science popularization live broadcast is a special event of the “National Science and Technology Education Rural Tour” in 2023. In addition to setting up offline scenes in Dali Prefecture and Binchuan County, teachers and students from more than 100 rural schools in the less developed areas of central and western China were also organized to watch simultaneously, aiming to promote the addition of rural science education and rural revitalization using science popularization resources. At the scene in Dali Prefecture, Associate Researcher Wang Rong, as a specially invited host, made a science popularization report entitled “The Mystery of the Deep Sea”. From the perspective of humans observing the world, summarizing laws and predicting the future, he explained that the existing time scale of observation data is not enough to support the research of earth science system law, so we must go to the deep sea to restore the causes and laws of major climate and environmental changes in the history of the earth, and elaborated the scientific significance of IODP program to students. Subsequently, Associate Researcher Ren Jian and Associate Professor Zhang Yancheng from Sun Yat-Sen University, who were on the IODP-400 voyage scientific expedition vessel, entered the live broadcast room and led the audience to visit the laboratory of the “Resolution” scientific expedition vessel. They explained and introduced the processing process of ocean drilling laboratory and the equipment on board, allowing students to experience the entire process of core drilling, processing and analysis in an immersive way. In the interactive question answering link, the two scientists answered questions raised by students on the location of the voyage, the difference between land and sea drilling, drilling depth, etc. This event was hosted by the Youth Science and Technology Center of the China Association for Science and Technology, the China Association of Children’s Science Instructors, the Science Popularization Business Unit of Xinhuanet, and the China Office of the International Ocean Discovery Program, and was fully broadcast live on Xinhuanet, with a total number of online viewers exceeding 2.35 million person-times.
