On December 12-13, the delegation headed by Chen Jianfang, Deputy Director of the SIO, participated in the International Symposium of the United Nations Regular Process on Strengthening the Ocean Science-Policy Interface, and discussed with more than 200 representatives from more than 20 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom and France, on international issues such as the interface between marine science and policy.

The World Ocean Assessment (WOA) is a routine procedure established by the United Nations General Assembly for global reporting and assessment of the state of the ocean (including the socio-economic status), which aims to regularly review and predict the environmental, socio-economic and other conditions of the world’s ocean, in order to promote and strengthen the regular scientific assessment of the global ocean. The third cycle of the WOA (2021-2025) is currently underway, and it emphasizes the scientific assessment service policy and governance. As an important component of WOA III, the International Symposium on Strengthening the Ocean Science-Policy Interface was held in Paris, France in December this year.

Deputy Director Chen Jianfang, as an expert in the regular process of global marine environment reporting and assessment, spoke on behalf of the Ministry of Natural Resources at the round-table conference and interactive session, sharing the experience of the Ministry of Natural Resources, as the main marine management agency in China, in marine disaster monitoring, ecological assessment and numerical model research and development and other scientific research services for marine business early warning forecast and ocean management. He also exchanged and discussed the needs and experiences of regional capacity building in the science-policy interface, the importance of scientific communication, and ocean literacy as a key element of the science-policy interface. His speech received positive responses from the delegates of various countries.
