From November 30 to December 1, the 10th National Symposium of Marine Ecology, jointly hosted by the SIO and the Marine Ecology Professional Committee of the Ecological Society of China, was held in Hangzhou. More than 300 representatives from 61 units across the country attended the symposium.

The theme of this symposium was “New Journey of Marine Ecological Science - Marine Ecological Protection, Restoration and Ecological Security”. Experts such as Academician Su Jilan from the Second Institute of Oceanography (“SIO”), Researcher Li Xiuzhen from East China Normal University, Researcher Cai Feng from the Third Institute of Oceanography, Researcher Sha Zhongli from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor He Qiang from Fudan University were invited to deliver keynote speeches focusing on such aspects as marine biological evolution, marine ecological restoration and marine ecological environment governance. Academician Su Jilan reviewed and summarized the current status of offshore ecological environment governance in China. From the relationship between human activities, coastal wetlands and marine ecological environment health, he deeply analyzed the existing problems in China’s offshore ecological environment governance and pointed out that more attention should be paid to scientific research in this field.

In addition to the keynote speeches, the symposium featured six themed sub-sessions. In-depth academic exchanges and idea collisions were carried out around topics such as “Marine Ecological Protection, Restoration and High-Quality Development”, “Marine Dual Carbon Strategy and Implementation Path”, “Marine Biodiversity and the Realization of Ecological Product Value”, “Marine Ecological Security Early Warning Monitoring and Evaluation Management”, “Assessment of Impacts of Global Change on Marine Organisms and Risk Prediction”, and “Construction of Marine Ecosystem Field Stations and Development of Observation Technologies”. Experts and scholars from multiple universities and research institutions across the country contributed nearly 80 academic reports. Du Ping, Zhou Yadong, Cao Wenting, Zhang Huaguo, Xu Jianping and others from the SIO presented the latest research findings of the SIO in the field of marine ecology in different themed reports.

12 excellent oral presentations by graduate students and 10 excellent posters were also evaluated in the symposium. Wei Yi, a doctoral student, and Fang Leyi, a master’s student from the SIO, won the first prize of the oral presentation by graduate students.

This symposium further strengthened the academic exchange in the field of marine ecology in China, promoted the development of China’s marine ecology, provided an important exchange platform for jointly building marine ecological civilization, and demonstrated the vital role of the SIO in driving exchanges in marine research and promoting the development of marine ecological environment protection.
