On February 28, the Observation and Research Station for Marine Risk and Hazard Management at Daya Bay, Ministry of Natural Resources was officially unveiled in Daya Bay, Huizhou, Guangdong, and the first meeting of the first academic committee was held. More than 50 representatives from management departments including the Department of Science and Technology Development of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Shanghai Municipal Oceanic Bureau, and the Administrative Committee of Huizhou Daya Bay Economic & Technological Development Zone, as well as invited experts, co-construction units and joint construction units attended the event.

The station was jointly constructed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Second Institute of Oceanography (“SIO”), and the Daya Bay Agriculture, Forestry and Water Resources Comprehensive Service Center. Researcher Zhang Huaguo from the SIO served as the station director, Academician Su Jilan as the director of the first academic committee, and Academician Lin Zhongqin from Shanghai Jiao Tong University as the director of the first management committee. Focusing on three typical marine risks and disasters, namely typhoon storm surges, marine ecological instability, oil and hazardous chemical spills, it aims to build a field observation and scientific research platform based on “air-space-land-sea” refined real-time three-dimensional observation. This platform will possess functions such as accurate prediction, early warning and decision-making services for marine risks and disasters, providing scientific and technological support for the construction of China’s marine disaster prevention and mitigation support system, as well as marine management and disaster prevention and mitigation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

At the meeting, Chen Jianfang, the deputy director of the SIO, delivered a speech on behalf of the co-construction units, and Researcher Zhang Huaguo presented a work report, introducing the target positioning, research directions, key tasks, talent team and development planning of the station. The attending experts engaged in thorough discussions, highly affirmed the construction significance and work foundation of the station, and provided constructive suggestions on aspects such as the layout and upgrade of the observation system, innovative research and data sharing, operational mechanism and team building.
