Recently, the 2025 Annual Exchange Seminar for the National Key R&D Program titled “Blue Carbon Carbon Sinks and Comprehensive Ecological Service Functions in Coastal Wetland Ecosystems” was held in Hangzhou. Academician Su Jilan and Deputy Director Chen Jianfang attended the event. During the conference, Deputy Director Chen Jianfang delivered a welcome speech, emphasizing that clarifying the inventory of carbon sinks in coastal wetlands is of great significance for achieving the national strategic goals of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality”. It is not only a crucial issue in scientific research but also an important cornerstone for practical advancement. Academician Su Jilan pointed out in his speech that coastal wetlands, especially tidal flats, play an indispensable role in providing various ecosystem services. He encouraged the project team to conduct systematic research and clarify key mechanisms. Professor Zhang Yihui from Xiamen University, the leader of the project team, provided a detailed report on the overall progress of the project. Subsequently, the principal investigators from Xiamen University, Fudan University, the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the SIO successively reported on the progress of their respective tasks. Researcher Chen Yining from the SIO, as the principal investigator of the project titled “Research and Development of Synergistic Enhancement Technologies for Carbon Sequestration and Biodiversity Conservation in Coastal Wetlands”, emphatically introduced the research progress of the synergistic mechanisms between carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation in coastal wetlands, as well as the recently developed “Synergistic Enhancement Technology for Carbon Sequestration and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation” and “Synergistic Enhancement Technology for Carbon Sequestration and Community Development”. The expert panel highly commended the interim achievements made since the project initiation and emphasized the need for further enhanced communication and collaboration among various research tasks as well as the acceleration of the refinement of project highlights to ensure the high-quality completion of the project.
