On September 2, the demarcation and marking project of the provincial marine special reserve in the east of Zhoushan City undertaken by the SIO passed the acceptance, marking the completion of demarcation and marking of the first marine nature reserve in Zhejiang Province under the new regulations on the integration and optimization of nature reserves.

Compared with terrestrial nature reserves, marine nature reserves have long sea boundaries and involve special marine elements such as coastline, coastal wetlands, islands, so the technical specifications and methods for demarcation and marking of terrestrial nature reserves can hardly be applied. After three years of efforts, the SIO developed a set of technical methods applicable to the demarcation and marking of marine nature reserves by taking the provincial marine special reserve in the east of Zhoushan City as an example. This set of technical methods has been successfully applied to the provincial marine special reserve in the east of Zhoushan City, and has been extended to the marine special reserve of Zhonglieshan Archipelago in Putuo, Zhejiang, the marine special reserve of Ma’an Archipelago in Shengsi, Zhejiang, and the Yuhuan National Marine Park.
