Recently, Wang Yuntao, a Researcher of the SIO, was selected as a member of the Strategic Communications Group of the UNESCO/IOC “Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development” (“Ocean Decade”). He is the only expert from East Asia among more than 20 selected experts in the world.

The Strategic Communications Group is responsible for providing advice to the “Ocean Decade” Advisory Committee, the “Ocean Decade” Coordination Section and other “Ocean Decade” agencies, coordinating joint communications initiatives and providing professional advice on any issues in the areas of work described in the terms of reference. The Strategic Communications Group is particularly committed to designing influential strategies to achieve the communication of the objectives of the “Ocean Decade”; reviewing and commenting on the strategic communication plans and products of the “Ocean Decade”; helping to improve the effectiveness and coverage of the dissemination of the “Ocean Decade”; helping member states to communicate on the “Ocean Decade” and its activities; helping to identify financial and physical resources and new partnerships.

The UNESCO/IOC recruited talents globally for the Strategic Communications Group of the “Ocean Decade” in October 2022 and received nearly 200 applications. Finally, more than 20 experts from different regions of the world were selected to form the first Strategic Communications Group. The members come from the United Nations agencies, scientific research, education, media, international and regional organizations and other relevant institutions, industries and fields. The term of office is two years.
