On November 6, the SIO, together with Hangzhou Gongshu District Association for Science and Technology and China National Rice Research Institute, organized and carried out the science popularization and research activity of “When the sea meets the paddy field - walk into the Rice Institute in autumn”. The families of the staff in the SIO went to China National Rice Research Institute to visit and learn agricultural knowledge and observe and explore the micro world.

During the activity, the families of the staff from the SIO and the Rice Institute visited the State Key Laboratory of Rice Biology together, and learned the little knowledge about rice. They also went to the field for work, and listened to the expert on rice harvesting techniques - “Hold the rice tightly in the left hand, take the sickle in the right hand, reap with the sickle accurately, and take the sickle back quickly”. The children participated in rice harvesting actively, experienced the fun of farming personally, and felt the joy of harvest together.

In the link of “Solar Terms Science Popularization Lecture”, the children learned the “Beginning of Winter”, one of the Chinese traditional 24 solar terms through poetry recitation, from the professional teacher, and had a science popularization quiz. In the DIY badge activity, the children made unique, childlike and themed badges with the paintbrush and the badge inner paper material. Every family was full of joy.

In this science popularization and research activity, the visit to the Rice Institute, rice harvesting and parent-child handcrafting were combined, and the parent-child families were led to learn about the rice culture and the Chinese traditional 24 solar terms, so that children can learn traditional culture and enhance their practical ability in the activity. Parents said that the activity not only enhanced the emotional interaction between children and between children and their families, but also cultivated children’s imagination and concentration ability, which is conducive to stimulating their interest in research and lighting up their dream of scientific exploration.
