On October 31, China’s 39th Antarctic Expedition started as the “Xue Long” left Shanghai, and three employees and four jointly trained postgraduates of the SIO set off for Antarctica. The “Xue Long 2” has already set off, and this is the third time for China to carry out Antarctic scientific research operations through two ships of “Xue Long”.

China’s 39th Antarctic Expedition will focus on major scientific issues such as the response and feedback of the key sea areas of the Southern Ocean to global climate change, investigate and study the atmospheric composition, water environment, sedimentary environment, ecosystem and other relevant fields, and conduct ice and snow environment monitoring and astronomical observation along Zhongshan Station, Taishan Station, and Kunlun Station. At the same time, the expedition team will use the “Snow Eagle 601” fixed-wing aircraft to explore the subglacial relief in Princess Elizabeth Land and other areas, and carry out the overwintering personnel rotation and material supply for Zhongshan Station and Great Wall Station in Antarctica.

During this expedition, Li Dong, Tao Keyu and Yang Xufeng from the Key Laboratory of Marine Ecosystem and Biogeochemistry of the SIO carried out relevant work on the two ships respectively, and four jointly trained postgraduates boarded the ship for polar ocean scientific expedition. The expedition team is scheduled to return to China in April 2023.
