Recently, the Chinese Society for Oceanography awarded the Outstanding Contribution Award to researcher Lv Wenzheng of the SIO to commend his outstanding contributions to the delimitation of continental shelf in the past 21 years.

Researcher Lv Wenzheng has been engaged in the research on the field of marine geophysics for many years, and has successively served as the chief scientist and consultant of China Ocean Mineral Resources R & D Association, member of the expert group of the National “863” Program, etc. In March 1997, Lv Wenzheng was elected as a member of the first Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf at the sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and was re-elected for four consecutive terms with high votes in 2002, 2007, 2012 and 2017, ensuring that China has never been absent from this important international organization.

Over the past 21 years, Lv Wenzheng has provided strong support for the establishment and improvement of the continental shelf system and the deliberation of the continental shelf delimitation proposal of coastal states. He participated in the formulation of the “three rules” that supported the operation of the Commission at the beginning of its establishment, namely, the rules of procedure, scientific and technological criteria, working procedures, and made the right propositions on the international stage where rule-making takes precedence. He participated in the deliberation of 15 continental shelf delimitation proposals. During the time-consuming deliberation, he always adhered to the “scientific, rational, favorable, moderate” principles and played his due role with his professional knowledge and political judgment. His work has been highly praised by China and relevant countries, and respected by the United Nations Secretariat, the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea and the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf.
