On July 22, 2021, the theme forum “Antarctic Marine Ecosystem and Environment” of series marine ecology forums of Key Laboratory of Marine Ecosystem Dynamics, Ministry of Natural Resources was initiated in SIO, MNR. It was the fourth theme forum held by our institute in 2021 and the first scientific forum focusing on polar research. During this forum, more than ten scientific researchers from seven domestic units, including First Institute of Oceanography, MNR, SIO, MNR, Third Institute of Oceanography, MNR, Ocean University of China, Polar Center, etc., were invited to participate in the theme report. They shared recent research progress and results on aspects such as key Antarctic sea waters’ hydrology, chemistry, biological ecology, sediments, geophysics, micro-plastics, etc. Also, they had in-depth exploration on the influence of global climate change on the Southern Ocean water masses, chemical elements and ecosystem structures and on the sedimentary changes of the Southern Ocean under the medium and long scales.
The Antarctic marine ecosystem is closely related to global climate change, and relevant researches have always been the forefront of international marine researches. It is also one of important strategic orientation of China’s future marine scientific research. The forum was with prominent theme and distinctive features. It provided a platform of learning and exchange for young researchers dedicated to Antarctic scientific research, and offered new possibilities for promoting multidisciplinary exchange and cooperation in China’s Antarctic marine ecology and environmental research.
