At the invitation of researcher Ruan Aiguo and deputy researcher Niu Xiongwei from Key Laboratory of Submarine Geosciences, Prof. Jean-Claude Sibuet, an internationally famous French marine geophysicist and structural geologist, visited our institute on June 11-15.
Prof. Jean-Claude Sibuet has been committed to the study of the formation and evolution of the rifted continental margin, and has unique views in the research fields of the Atlantic  pericontinental area, the Bangladeshi seabed sector and the Okinawa trough in the Western Pacific region, Taiwan orogenic belt and the tectonic deformation of the South China Sea. He served as the chief editor of Marine Geophysical Research magazine for more than 10 years, the chief scientist of more than 40 voyages, including IODP (Legs 47B, 80 and 210), and published more than 180 articles on the geoscience journal including Nature.
During the visit, Prof. Jean-Claude Sibuet made a continuous academic report in the Key Laboratory of Submarine Geosciences, “Why external constraints applied to the boundaries of the South China Sea marginal basin modify conventional rifting processes? What do we learn from rifting processes on the margins of the eastern North Atlantic Ocean?”, attempting to analyze the formation and evolution of the South China Sea from a new perspective of the formation and evolution of the Iberian plate. In the lecture entitled "How to write a scientific paper in journals published in English?", he carefully explained the detailed process of writing English papers for graduate students and young scientists and technicians, and demonstrated the application of research aid ENDNOTE and Research Gate website, which benefited the participants a lot.
During the visit, Prof. Jean-Claude Sibuet conducted in-depth exchanges with the researcher Gao Jinyao and Ding Weiwei from Key Laboratory of Submarine Geosciences. At the same time, Prof. Jean-Claude Sibuet conducted one-to-one guidance to many young scientists and technicians and graduate students in Key Laboratory of Submarine Geosciences, and provided suggestions on their problems in scientific research and paper recently.
