OnAugust 19, local time, Associate Researcher Zhuang Yanpei of the Marine Ecologyand Environment Laboratory arrived at the North Pole with the German"Polarstern" icebreaker and opened the scientific research mission ofthe 5th segment of the "International Arctic Drifting Ice StationObservation Program (MOSAiC)".
MOSAiCplans to use the German "Polestar" icebreaker as the main platform, which was frozen in the central Arctic Ocean in October 2019 and drifted withthe ocean currents until October 2020 to complete a one-year observation on iceto deepen understanding of the coupling process of Arctic atmosphere -sea ice-ocean- ecosystem. After arriving at the North Pole, the "Polestar"would continue to search for reliable floating ice. The scientific expeditionteam would conduct a comprehensive survey of marine physics, marine ecology andmarine chemistry at the Northpole CTD station.
Atotal of about 17 scientific expedition team members from China participated inthe MOSAiC voyage, of which 5 expedition team members were sent by SIO.Associate researcher He Hailun and Assistant researcher Ren Jian participatedin the first segment, and Assistant researcher Bai Youcheng and Dr. Lin Longparticipated in the peripheral deployment task of the first segment. Associateresearcher Zhuang Yanpei would be responsible for the sampling and routinemaintenance of phytoplankton samplers, large-volume filters, nitrate profilersand other equipment during the last voyage to have a deeper understanding ofthe evolution of the Arctic Ocean phytoplankton community and response toglobal changes.
