At the end of September, the SIO held the International Symposium on the Western Pacific - East African Continental Margin, and scholars from various research institutions in Madagascar and Mozambique and domestic experts conducted discussions.

The symposium was presided over by Professor Tang Yong, Director of the Continental Shelf Center, and Professor Mahanjane Estevão Sitefane from Mozambique. Zafiry, Deputy Director General of Madagascar National Bureau of Mines and Strategic Industries, Neusa Andre César, Director of the Marine Affairs Division of the Mozambique National Institute for Marine and Boundary Studies, and Researcher Tang Yong delivered opening speeches on behalf of Madagascar, Mozambique and China.

At the meeting, academic exchanges were carried out by Professor Ren Jianye from China University of Geosciences, Wuhan on the progress of research about the tectonic evolution of the South China Sea, Researcher Yan Quanshu from the First Institute of Oceanography on the geochemical research progress of the Kyushu-Palau Ridge (KPR) rock in the Philippine Sea plate, Wei Xiaodong from the Second Institute of Oceanography (SIO) on the latest geophysical survey results of KPR, Niu Xiongwei on the progress of OBS survey in Arctic scientific research, scientists from Madagascar, Mozambique and China on the tectonic evolution of the East African continental margin, etc.
