On November 30, the seismic observation station jointly built by the SIO and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu was officially opened at Bidong Island of Malaysia. The seismic data about the South China Sea obtained by the station will deeply support the study of the deep dynamic mechanism of earthquake and tsunami disasters in the Southeast Asian circular subduction system.

Bidong Island, located in the South China Sea, is about 14 kilometers from the mainland of Peninsular Malaysia, and there are no permanent residents. The seismic station jointly built in this cooperation is located next to the research base of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu on the island, and is installed in a seismic observation well above the bedrock. The observation equipment is equipped with a sealed cabin and no external cables, avoiding external factors such as lightning and heavy rainfall. After being put into service, the seismic observation station will read seismic data once a week, which will provide important information for filling the gap of seismic data in the South China Sea.

The SIO signed a cooperation agreement with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu in July this year to promote close cooperation between the two sides in the fields of marine seismology and marine geophysics. In addition to joint construction of the seismic observation station, both sides will work together to promote onshore-offshore seismic surveys and deepen the understanding of the deep structure of the South China Sea.
