On March 9, China’s 85th Ocean Exploration Voyage, organized by the China Deep Ocean Affairs Administration and implemented by the SIO, set sail from Xiamen by DA YANG HAO ship.

The system units of the Ministry of Natural Resources, relevant universities and research institutes participated in the first leg of this voyage. Associate Researcher Liao Shili from the Key Laboratory of Submarine Geosciences of the SIO served as the chief scientist. There were also three exploration and training personnel of the International Seabed Administration from Africa on this leg.

The overall goals of this voyage are to conduct a baseline survey of sulfide resources and environment, obtain the resource and environmental survey data, fulfill the offshore exploration training obligations of the International Seabed Authority, and provide support for the completion of the third five-year exploration target in the contract area and the selection of new prospective areas. In the voyage survey, the high-tech equipment produced by China are mainly adopted, including the Hailong IV tethered submersible and its carrying equipment, deep-sea core sampling rig, etc.

Before setting sail, Xiamen Maritime Safety Administration inspected the fire protection, lifesaving, crew operation skills and maintenance of key equipment of DA YANG HAO, and the SIO also organized experts to conduct pre-voyage inspections to ensure that the personnel and equipment of the voyage meet the relevant conditions.
