On April 22-25, the 2nd United Nations Decade of Ocean Regional Conference and the 11th Western Pacific International Conference on Marine Science of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization were held in Bangkok, Thailand and the delegation of the SIO attended and organized multiple side meetings to share the experience in marine technology and management.
With “Accelerating Marine Science Solutions for Sustainable Development” as the theme of the conference, the conference aimed to promote marine science solutions and sustainable development of the ocean around topics such as ocean processes and climate change, conservation of marine biodiversity, blue economy and health of marine ecosystem. Marine stakeholders from over 40 countries, including governments, academia, United Nations agencies, social organizations, and civil society, jointly discussed the current status of marine science, identified future priorities, and discussed the implementation of updating and promoting partnerships and specific actions.
The researcher Wang Yuntao from the SIO convened a side meeting on “Mitigation of Natural Incidence Towards an increased Oceanic Resilience (MoNITOR)” during the conference, introducing the background, progress, and vision of the MoNITOR project, discussed with experts from Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries about how to improve the ability to respond to marine disasters and human activities that cause marine ecological environment responses. Researcher Feng Xuwen participated in the “Decade of Ocean Action Seminar: Accelerating Marine Space Planning in the Western Pacific and Adjacent Areas” side meeting, introducing the purpose, path, method, and role of the delineation of retreat lines for coastal buildings of China in marine space planning with the focus on the impact of storm surges on the marine aquaculture industry and discussing with marine space planning experts from Australia, South Korea, and other countries about how to divide disaster zones and other technical issues.
Associate Researcher Wang Pengbin from the SIO convened a side meeting on the “management and mitigation of harmful algal blooms”, carrying out in-depth exchanges and discussions with experts and scholars from the Western Pacific region on the current situation, rapid detection technology, management methods, and mitigation plans of harmful algal blooms in the Western Pacific region. Associate Researcher Cao Wenting convened a side meeting on “Monitoring and Management of Marine Ecosystems Based on Satellite and Aerial Remote Sensing Technology” and a seminar on “Promoting the Application of Remote Sensing Technology in Sustainable Marine Development” under the United Nations Decade of Ocean incubation project, discussing and exchanging ideas on the assessment of marine carbon sink potential with representatives from multiple Western Pacific countries, including China, Japan, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
