From September 23 to 26, the delegation of the SIO attended the 2024 GEO Work Plan Project Workshop and Open Data & Open Knowledge Workshop hosted by the Secretariat of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), and shared the latest earth observation achievements of the SIO in remote sensing capacity building in Pacific island countries.

GEO is currently the largest and most authoritative intergovernmental international organization in the field of global earth observation. With the theme of “Sailing with Vision, Building Dreams with Action: Jointly Drawing the Blueprint for GEO Third Decade Implementation Plan”, the conference featured an opening ceremony, a closing ceremony, and 27 special topics, including discussion on GEO work plan projects, discussion on open data and open knowledge, and exhibition of earth observation achievements. The event attracted nearly 400 delegates from 68 GEO member countries (regions) and 19 international organizations worldwide.

During the conference, Researcher Zhang Huaguo and Associate Researcher Cao Wenting from the SIO systematically presented the achievements of the national key research and development program “Monitoring and Capacity Building of Typical Ecological Elements in the Oceans and Coastal Zones of Pacific Island Countries” under the China-GEO cooperation framework undertaken by the SIO through on-site explanation, video demonstration and poster display. The series of earth observation achievements in open data and open knowledge sharing, disaster emergency monitoring, and international exchanges and cooperation won attention and recognition from participants. This achievement display and exchange was a practice of the SIO to strengthen international cooperation under the GEO framework, which will propel the promotion and cooperation of the earth observation achievements of the SIO to countries along the “Belt and Road”.
