On September 23, the 11th Plenary Session of the International Organization for Standardization/ Marine Technology Subcommittee (ISO/TC8/SC13) was successfully held in Panama City, the capital of Panama. Academician Chen Dake, the Chairman of SC13, along with 13 experts from Japan, Panama and China, attended the session.
During the session, Researcher Feng Xuwen, Manager of the Secretariat, presented a work progress report. Each working group reported on their achievements over the past year and their plans for the next step, while also receiving proposals for two new projects. Since the 10th session in September last year, the ISO/TC8/SC13 has completed the formulation of three standards: ISO 5411:2024 Ships and marine technology - Submersibles - Vocabulary, ISO 23745:2024 Ships and marine technology - General specification for shipborne meteorological instruments, and ISO 13205:2024 Ocean technology - Seawater desalination - Vocabulary. Additionally, two new member countries, Spain and Colombia, have joined, and two new projects were approved by voting. The convening of the plenary session effectively advanced the work of the ISO/TC8/SC13.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Academician Chen Dake hoped that the plenary session would seize the hot issues of global climate change and the application of artificial intelligence in the field of marine technology to accelerate standard-setting, fully leverage the role of the ISO/TC8/SC13 platform, and strengthen communication and cooperation with international legislative bodies, improving the efficiency of standard-setting.
Representatives of the SIO also participated in the management meeting and the 43rd plenary session of Ship and Marine Technology Committee (ISO/TC8). Academician Chen Dake presented a report on the Management Operation and Work Progress of the ISO/TC8/SC13. Researcher Feng Xuwen received the 2024 ISO/TC8 Excellence Award in recognition of her 11 years of contributions to ISO/TC8/SC13.
