On April 24, the First BRICS Workshop on Sustainable Development of Deep-Sea Resources and Environment hosted by the SIO was held in Hangzhou. Experts and scholars from nine countries including Russia, Brazil, South Africa, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Canada, as well as from international organizations and Chinese research institutions and universities, gathered together to discuss strategies for sustainable development of deep-sea resources and environment among BRICS countries.

  During the workshop, keynote speeches were delivered by academician Farid Chemale Junior from the Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, Professor Georgy Cherkashov, Deputy Director of the All-Russian Institute of Marine Geology and Mineral Resources, and Researcher Peng Xiaotong, Deputy Director of the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. They respectively presented the achievements of their respective countries in deep-sea resources, ocean drilling, etc., as well as the prospects and outlook for cooperation with the BRICS countries. Experts and scholars engaged in multi-faceted exchanges and discussions around the BRICS cooperation and exchange mechanisms as well as deep-sea scientific research.

As the first event following the establishment of the BRICS Deep-Sea Resources International Research Center, the workshop provided a platform for academic exchanges, technology sharing and joint research among BRICS countries. Scientists from various countries are constantly striving to promote the establishment of a new international cooperation model that balances the sustainable utilization of resources with the safety of the deep-sea environment.
