Recently, Lv Wenzheng and Tang Yong, researchers from the Laboratory of Submarine Geosciences of our institute, attended the 20th anniversary of the founding of Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) along with the permanent mission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the United Nations. CLCS, one of the three major marine bodies established in 1997 under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, is responsible for reviewing the proposal to the UN on the delimitation of continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles and bringing forward the ultimate suggestion with binding force on the delimitation. It is formed by experts in geology, geophysics and mapping from 21 countries. From 1997 to 2017, 49 scientists from 37 countries served as members of CLCS, and Mr. Lv Wenzheng from our institute is the only member in China who has taken office for 4 consecutive terms.
