Recently, the World Meteorological Organization awarded the 66th International Meteorogical Organization (IMO) Prize to Professor In-Sik Kang from the State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics of SIO.
The IMO award is the highest honor in the field of international meteorology. It was established in 1955 and is awarded to one person every year to reward those who have made outstanding contributions in meteorology, hydrology, geophysics and related fields. The IMO award affirmed Professor In-Sik Kang’s outstanding contributions on climate science, especially in the field of climate modeling and prediction, his pioneering role on operational climate prediction and research, and achievements on training next generation of scientists including those from developing countries.
Professor In-Sik Kang joined SIO in 2018 as the Scientific Director of the Indian Ocean Center. He pioneered a multi-mode ensemble seasonal prediction system, proved the value of the multi-mode ensemble prediction in actual seasonal forecast, and promoted the establishment of APEC Climate Center (APCC). At present, Professor In-Sik Kang and his research team are working on the development of the Indian Ocean’s ocean-atmosphere coupling mode, so as to improve China’s prediction on the Indian Ocean and its surrounding waters from intra seasonal scale to intra seasonal time scale.
