On September 23, the International Organization for Standardization/Ship and Marine Technology Committee (ISO/TC8) held its 43rd plenary session and awarded the 2024 ISO Excellence Award to Wang Chunsheng of the SIO in recognition of his leadership in completing the first ISO standard specifically for marine surveys in the international seabed area, titled “Marine Environmental Impact Assessment (MEIA) - Technical Specifications for Marine Biotic Surveys in the International Seabed Area - General Principles” (ISO 22787:2023).
The standard, officially published in July 2023, provides technical recommendations for the survey of almost all types of marine life, including marine mammals, birds, benthic animals and microorganisms, in the international seabed area, covering various aspects such as survey projects, survey strategies, design, analysis and quality control. This standard promotes the standardization of marine biological survey methods in the international seabed area, enhances the comparability of survey data, and provides more specific guidance for marine biological surveys in the international seabed area. Furthermore, it will also drive the investigation and conservation of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ), and facilitate international cooperation in marine biological surveys in the international seabed area.
This is the second time that a researcher from the SIO has won this award following Academician Li Jiabiao. It is also an affirmation from the ISO for the outstanding contributions made by the SIO in the field of marine technology international standards.
