To advance the implementation of the National Key Research and Development Program project titled “Impacts of the Convergence of the Pacific, Eurasian and Indian Plates on Earth’s Habitability”, and to deepen scientific and technological cooperation between China and Indonesia in the marine field, the SIO and the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (BRIN) officially signed an implementation agreement for a joint geological and geophysical expedition in the convergence area of the Java and Australian plates recently.

This agreement represents a further implementation of the cooperation frameworks, such as the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), signed between the SIO and Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia last year. It further refines the China-Indonesia bilateral cooperation system, clarifies the mechanisms and implementation plans for joint marine scientific expeditions, and will substantially promote comprehensive geophysical cooperation research in the Java subduction zone area of Indonesia.

Both sides held discussions and agreed to closely collaborate on capacity building in deep seismic data processing and interpretation, the establishment of seismic laboratories, the cultivation of young talents and other related aspects. This will enhance monitoring and prediction capabilities for geological disasters such as major earthquakes and tsunamis, and further promote close cooperation between the two sides in such fields as marine science, disaster prevention and mitigation, and climate change.
