He holds a PhD and is a Research Professor, currently serving as President of the Zhejiang Institute of Marine Science. He is Co-Chair of InterRidge (International Ridge Studies) and the Founding Chair of ISO/TC 8/SC 13 Marine Technology under the International Organization for Standardization. He was elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2015.
He has long been engaged in research on seafloor science and marine exploration engineering. His work has been recognized with two Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, three Special Prizes and eight First Prizes at the provincial and ministerial levels, as well as the Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress and the National May Day Labor Medal. He has published five monographs, one atlas, six volumes of collected papers in Chinese and English, and 173 academic papers. He holds nine international and domestic invention patents and has led the development of 11 national standards.
He has twice served as Chief Scientist of the National 973 Program and has led multiple major and key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has also served as Chief Scientist for national marine programs including China’s continental shelf delimitation and the National Mid-Ocean Ridge Exploration Program. He chaired the Marine Science Review Panel of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (2017–2018) and serves as Vice President of the Chinese Society for Oceanography, Deputy Director of the Marine Science Committee of the Academic Board of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Vice President of the Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology.
