He is widely recognized as one of the founders and leading pioneers of ocean remote sensing science and technology in China.

He has made original and influential contributions to atmospheric correction of ocean colour remote sensing, bio-optical inversion models, application technologies, as well as simulation and performance modeling of satellite remote-sensing missions. He has published more than 140 papers in China and abroad. His work has played a foundational and decisive role in establishing and advancing ocean colour remote sensing and satellite remote-sensing simulation sciences in China.

He was awarded the national title of Young and Middle-Aged Scientist with Outstanding Contributions in 1994, received the Special Government Allowance of the State Council in 1997, the Significant Contribution Award of the National High-Tech R&D Program (863 Program) in 2000, and the Remote Sensing Science Achievement Award of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) in 2002. In 2003, he received the Special Prize of the State Science and Technology Progress Award (individual award) for his outstanding contributions to China’s crewed space program.

Over his more than 30 years of scientific research, he has received five First Prizes and eight Second Prizes for Scientific and Technological Progress at the provincial and ministerial levels.
